Greenwich to be given a makeover by city photographer Ryan Li

Press release

Award-winning cityscape photographer Ryan Li has been commissioned to photograph the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. The images will form part of the WHS Marketing Group’s press and online advertising campaign in the run up to the 2012 London Olympic Games, to promote Greenwich as a diverse and vibrant destination for holidaymakers and day-trippers.

Ryan Li said: “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to work on this project. I have known and loved Greenwich for many years, and it is my favourite place to bring friends who visit from abroad, I love the roast beef sandwiches in the market and the view from the Observatory is one of the best in London.” Read the rest of this entry »

Nida & Alexander, 16.7.2010

One day, I went to the hospital and took an elevator to the 28th floor

You only have one shot.

The moment that matters

When memories fade, the photographs will remain.

When photographs fade, the image will remain.

The image will always exist in the fact that a shutter once opened, light once triggered a chemical or electrical reaction, emotions once came alive.

Nothing can change that fact.

The fact was established in a split second, yet lasts forever, even if you can no longer see it or touch it.

The shutter can never be unopened. The optical reaction can never be undone. The emotions can never be unawakened.

Each and every image is the one and only shot that you will ever capture of that split second, of that cross-section in space, of that cross-section of emotional state.

That is the magic of photography.

So, let us make the most of that one shot.

UNESCO World Heritage Site commission

Looking for some stimulation?

Very exciting news – I have won a major commission to photograph for the publicity and advertising campaign of a globally renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site in Britain. More details as I can reveal them!

Four cities

I have recently submitted a pitch to produce photography for a famous British World Heritage Site. Here is a selection of travel images I have included to promote my cause.

As a commercial photographer, I don’t usually have the problem of finding interesting subjects – if someone is paying me to photograph something, then by definition I already have an interested audience.

What is a challenge to every professional photographer is that the subject does not always present itself in visually interesting circumstances. A true professional adds value to the image; he or she captures the subject at its most aesthetically striking, in a way that enhances the message communicated by the image.

Nida & Alexander, 16.7.2010

Nida & Alexander on high chairs

Don’t we all enjoy stories? I certainly have many fond memories as a child, on those sleepless excitable nights, of my father reading bedtime stories to me. Each and every couple I encounter bring a unique tale: who they are, how they met, what future they will have together. As a wedding photographer, it is my greatest passion to glimpse into every love story from a privileged vantage point, and recount the tale using light and shadow. The story of Nida and Alexander is one of cross-channel, cross-cultural love.

Nida is a Pakistani living in Britain; Alexander is Dutch, residing in the Netherlands. On the surface, the cultural differences appear vast. Yet, the chemistry between Nida and Alexander in front of the camera proves that love surmounts all differences. They were playful, they enjoyed each other’s presence, they worked as a team at every step. Their expressions sparked off each other, and they were just brilliant to be photographed together. More photos to come soon.

East London Line launch party

DrummerThe mercury soared to 28 degrees last Sunday, and what perfect timing to party, especially on an air-conditioned train. Thanks to my good friend and budding journalist Emily Jupp, who organised this fantastic day of poetry, music and dance performances, in celebration of the launch of the East London Line overground service. If only the daily commute could be this much fun!
